The Withdrawal Agreement for UK Nationals and TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad Extranjero).
As of July 6, 2020 Spain has established the new procedure for British Nationals to apply for Residencia and from Gestoria Salvador we wish to send a message of calm to the British community.
From this date, the registration certificate for citizens of the European Union (A4 green paper or credit card-sized paper) will no longer be issued and a new document called TIE (Foreign Identification Card) will be issued in its place. A transitional period is already established, giving until December 31 2020 for UK nationals and their families to apply for residence and to preserve their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement. After that date UK citizens will be treated as a non-EU third-country national.
Although a new TIE document will be issued from now until December 31 2020, the requirements for British citizens wishing to obtain it will be exactly the same as before. From 2021 new requirements will be established but these are still to be determined.
For those who already have legal right of residence in Spain they can obtain the TIE document by adhering to some procedures at the Immigration Office (Oficina de la Extranjeria) and the validity of the TIE document they obtain will depend on the years they have been registered as legally resident in Spain.
* For those who have been legally resident in Spain (green paper/card) for more than 5 years, they will receive a TIE with a validity of 10 years.
* For those who have legal residence in Spain (green paper/card) less than 5 years, they will receive a TIE with a validity of 5 years.
Therefore, the message that we want to convey from Gestoría Salvador is one of calmness. There are no important changes, nor is anyone going to cease to be resident. Those who want to apply for residence before the end of 2020 will have to meet the same requirements as until now, with the only difference being that instead of receiving a Certificate of Registration of European Union Citizens (green paper/card), they will now receive the TIE.
